DRAFT - Syntax Highlighting

2026-09-02

These blog posts have some cool ideas on how syntax highlighting should be done for code:

Their principles are sound, but there’s something I don’t like about each of them. The first shows a theme that’s entirely monochrome, but otherwise has good stuff. I think selective use of color is useful, not to mention I like the things I work with all the time to be pretty.

The second has an interesting idea about highlighting comments. I think this is a great idea when combined with the practice of not over-commenting code. However, it makes code with public doc comments annoying to read.

The third, and the other two as well, don’t have the colors I like.

So, what if there was a way to take a theme and convert it to have the principles above?
