Claude GitHub Etiquette
2026-08-27
Please don’t let Claude run rampant when it produces something other developers will read. Unlike a Human, Claude is more than happy to write hundreds of lines in the PR description of a 1-line fix.
How to prevent this? I give Claude a few simple rules:
- When writing GitHub issues, pull request descriptions, or comments, the main content must never be longer than a few lines. If more detail is necessary, place the detail in a collapsible block with a short summary.
- Never comment directly on another user’s pull request, or their comments on your pull requests. This is a subset of the more general rule of not letting Claude directly interact with other Humans (see the excellent Don’t be a meat proxy).
